The Green Hospitality Award is an environmental certificate awarded to hotels/guesthouses and hospitality businesses which prove their commitment to the environment by fulfilling a number of key requirements. By the end of 2009 there were c.200 members and c.120 awards issued and the programme is recognised nationally and internationally.
The award is granted based on performance in implementing an Environmental Management System, Waste Management, Water Management and Energy Management.
The Green Hospitality Award requires continual improvement and a real commitment to the environment. Recent research has shown that more customers are looking for the hospitality sector to demonstrate good environmental performance.
Members of the GHA have made annualized savings of between €10,000 to €100,000 by utilising the best practice advice and support available through the programme.
The Green Hospitality Award extended nationwide in 2008 and is supported by the Environmental Protection Agency. In 2010 a new Eco-Label will be launched designed to service the micro-tourism sector
