Minister Noonan Confirms 9% Tourism VAT Rate Will No longer Be Seen as Temporary

7th November 2013: The Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) welcomes the confirmation by Minister Noonan that the 9% tourism VAT rate retained in last month’s budget will no longer be seen as temporary and will now be treated like all other tax rates in future budgets. Tim Fenn, Chief Executive of the IHF says that the reduced VAT rate has been enormously successful in enabling tourism businesses to take on additional staff with 15,200 new jobs being created to date at a very difficult time when employment would otherwise have dropped significantly.

“Today’s confirmation by Minister Noonan that the tourism VAT rate will longer be seen as a temporary measure is a much welcome recognition by the Government of the important role tourism plays as a labour intensive industry with enormous potential for job creation. The measure will provide us with greater certainty over the coming years and allow us to compete more effectively abroad for holidaymakers. This will have enormous benefits for increased employment throughout the country, particularly in rural regions.”
