HOTELIERS WELCOME FINE GAEL’S STRONG COMMITMENT TO IRISH TOURISM

“Tourism can be a vital driver of economic recovery,” says Irish Hotels Federation

6th January 2011

The Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) today welcomed Fine Gael’s commitment to ensuring tourism remains at the heart of Government policy and a strategic driver of Ireland’s economic renewal. In particular, the IHF welcomed the tourism policies outlined by the party which demonstrate a strong commitment to improving competitiveness, providing greater availability of credit for tourism businesses and prioritising barrier-free access to Ireland as an island destination.

Tim Fenn, Chief Executive, IHF states, “As an island destination, we face some unique challenges in terms of access and competitiveness. If we get tourism right, it can be a substantial driver of economic recovery in Ireland, so it’s vital that everything is done to support this important area of the economy.”

The IHF welcomes the following commitments announced today:

  • Government charges: Commitment to controlling local and central government charges through a three-year freeze and, where feasible, lowering central and local government costs, such as energy and rates, to the tourism sector.
  • VAT: Commitment to reduce Value Added Tax (VAT) on hotel accommodation and restaurants to 12%, thereby providing an important stimulus to the sector.
  • Loan guarantee scheme: Commitment to investigate the setting up of a Loan Guarantee Scheme for the tourism sector on similar lines to those available in the UK – as outlined in the IHF’s pre-budget submission. Please click HERE to access.
  • Access: Commitment to remove the air travel tax and review charges at all airports.
