Irish Hotels Federation Welcomes NEW Tourism Minister
Minister will have a leading role in shaping the direction of Irish tourism

The IHF has welcomed the appointment of Martin Cullen, TD, as Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism and paid tribute to the valuable contribution made by his predecessor Séamus Brennan, TD. Matthew Ryan, President, IHF, states, “Minister Cullen brings a vast wealth of experience having served across a wide range of Government departments. From day one, Minister Cullen will have a leading role in shaping the direction of Irish tourism, particularly in light of the major competitive challenges confronting the industry.”

“Irish tourism is now at a cross roads and facing a challenging economic environment both domestically and in our important UK and US markets. The strengthening of the euro against sterling and the dollar has increased this challenge. While current Government policy recognises tourism as a vital constituent within the Irish economy, continuous support will be essential if we are to sustain the present level of tourism activity and achieve future growth,” adds Mr Ryan.

Mr Ryan paid tribute to the commitment shown to tourism by Mr Séamus Brennan during his time as Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism. Mr Ryan states, “Since his appointment in 2007 and during his previous periods as Minister responsible for Tourism and Transport, Mr Brennan was always available to the industry understood its issues and was ever supportive.”

Tourism is Ireland’s largest indigenous industry employing 150,000 people spread throughout the country. It is a major contributor to the economy and a major economic asset worthy of continuing significant Government support. In 2007, total tourism revenue was approximately €6.5 billion and accounted for 4% of GNP.
