HOTELIERS WELCOME NEW RYANAIR ROUTES FOR SHANNON AIRPORT

Additional air services will provide welcome boost for local tourism businesses

Hoteliers have welcomed today’s announcement that Ryanair is to significantly increase its air services into Shannon Airport in 2014 with the addition of eight new routes to continental Europe and an increase in services on the Shannon-Stansted route.

Mr Matt Muller, Chairman of the Shannon Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) called the announcement a strong vote of confidence in local tourism, following the Government’s decision to scrap the air travel tax.

He said: “The new routes are good news for the wider Shannon catchment area and come a week after the announcement by United Airlines to resume seasonal non-stop service between Shannon and its Chicago hub in 2014. In particular, the routes from Berlin, Munich and Paris and additional UK capacity will provide a very welcome boost for tourism businesses, including hotels and guesthouses.”

“These additional air services will help build on the gains made this year during the ‘The Gathering,’ which has been a success for the wider Shannon area.” says Mr Muller. “We look forward to working with Tourism Ireland and Shannon Airport to ensure the potential of these new routes is fully maximised.”

The announcement follows a successful marketing strategy by Shannon Airport which has yielded strong growth so far this year with a 7% increase in overall passenger numbers over the peak summer period.
