Objective:  The objective of this post is to assist the Head Porter in the management and operation of a general portering service for the RCSI St Stephen’s Green campus and to facilitate the smooth operation of RCSI activities. The Deputy Head Porter will also be a participating member of the portering team.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities, including:

Assisting the Head Porter:

  • Proactively assisting the Head Porter in the scheduling and rostering of the portering team and the delivery of the portering service
  • Deputising for the Head Porter in the performance of management / supervisory during periods of absence and on other occasions as appropriate
  • Performing such other duties as agreed with and delegated by the Head porter

Performing general portering duties, including:

  • Sorting, distributing and processing incoming and outgoing post and messages in RCSI city centre premises
  • Distributing deliveries of goods to RCSI premises and to collect the same as requested
  • Providing and maintaining a neat and tidy environment within the perimeters of RCSI buildings
  • Maintaining regular communications with the Head Porter while on duty via mobile communications
  • Laying out tables, chairs, desks and other furnishings in accordance with the requirements for examinations, lunches, receptions, exhibitions and other such functions as may be organised on RCSI premises
  • Responsibility for portering duties in relation to conferences and functions within RCSI
  • Assisting with the evacuation of RCSI premises in emergencies and during drills
  • Reporting any health and safety issues to the Head Porter
  • Providing tours of RCSI for VIP’s and prospective students and their families, when requested
  • Distributing gowns for conferring ceremonies
  • Assisting with seating control during large events
  • Raising and lowering of flags
  • Lighting fires as requested
  • Complying with statutory legislation and Department rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety
  • Identify health and safety training needs when required
  • In order to provide effective and efficient services it is expected that the successful candidate be flexible in terms of hours of work

Other Duties:

  • Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time.
  • Representing the best interests of the Department/RCSI at all times.
  • Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time as outlined by the Head Porter or Head of Department.
  • Be flexible and responsive to the needs of staff and students
  • Develop strong working relationship with students and internal stakeholders

  • Energetic and enthusiastic self-starter using own initiative to complete tasks
  • Learns quickly and responds effectively to changing customer needs and circumstances, puts forward ideas and recommendations
  • Solving every-day student and staff issues by quickly identifying possible corrective measures and recommending/ selecting the best solution.
  • Self-motivated, able to work without supervision, IT competent
  • Be flexible and responsive to the needs of staff and students
  • Develop strong working relationship with students and internal stakeholders
