Retaining employees in the first weeks and months of employment is one of the most pressing challenges in Irish hospitality. New data from Alkimii and recruitment platform Talos360 puts a sharper number on the problem: revealing that nearly one in three new starters leave within 90 days, with 12.8% gone before the end of their first month.
The findings, published in a whitepaper, draw on real application and workforce data from across Ireland to examine why new starters leave and what can be done to support them to stay, from first application right through to the critical first months in role.
The research highlights a key moment in the employee journey. The period between a signed contract and a settled, confident employee is where retention is won or lost, and it is a window that moves fast. New starters complete their first shift an average of just 5.9 days after onboarding begins, making early communication, preparation and first impressions critical to keeping people in their roles.
Key findings include:
- Nearly 1 in 3 new starters in Irish hospitality leave within their first 90 days
- 12.8% of new hires leave before the end of their first month
- New starters begin their first shift an average of just 5.9 days after onboarding begins
